Unmasking Your Authentic Self this Halloween: A Professional’s Guide to Showing Up as You Are

Each Halloween, we don costumes and step into new, but familiar roles – we delve into the art of transformation! Historically, Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, served us, as a time to honor the ‘hallowed’—the holy saints and spirits—and we challenged to confront our fears of the unknown.
Today, I’d like for you to perceive Halloween as an opportunity to reflect on the masks you and I wear every day and to ask ourselves the question: are we being true to ourselves? Or are we presenting a version that we think feels more acceptable to the world?

In a professional setting, ‘mask-wearing’ is the norm. It helps us navigate expectations, project confidence, or avoid vulnerability. But what if we could show up as our authentic selves? I have some ideas on that that I want to share with you here.

Here are five ways to unmask yourself and stand out in a meaningful way, both professionally and personally.

  1. Embrace Your Inner ‘Ghosts’ – Acknowledge Past Experiences
Halloween reminds us of spirits and ancestors, much like our professional lives hold their own ‘ghosts’—the past experiences that shape us. Instead of hiding from these memories, recognize how they’ve influenced your journey. Look at both successes and missteps to see how they’ve taught resilience, built confidence, or shaped your values. Honor your past – it has helped you show up with greater self-awareness.
  2. Unmask the Real You – Let Go of Personas
Professional personas can serve us in certain contexts but become exhausting if we rely on them permanently. What parts of you hide behind these professional masks? Idea: start taking notice when you slip into ‘performance mode’ and find ways to incorporate more of your real self into your daily interactions. Your unique traits make you memorable and trustworthy to colleagues and clients alike. You can be you!
  3. Face Your Fears – Overcome What Holds You Back
Halloween brings us face-to-face with the eerie unknown, but we have learned to transform the eerie into a fun adventure. Can you think about something that is eerie in your professional life , something that bring up fears, could be holding you (all of us, actually) back? What fears prevent you from fully stepping into a leadership role or speaking up? Is it fear of judgment, failure, or even success? Shine a light on these fears. When you confront them, they lose their power, freeing you to embrace your full potential.
  4. Honor the Season of Change – Reflect and Set Intentions
Halloween signals transition, a time to let go and prepare for new growth. Idea: Use this year’s season to assess what no longer serves you in your work or routines. Are you holding onto old habits or mindsets that limit your growth? Letting go allows you to recalibrate and set new intentions for how you want to show up in the coming months.
  5. Connect with Your True Tribe – Find Strength in Authentic Connections
Traditionally, Halloween brought communities together, reminding us we don’t journey alone. Building genuine connections at work offers both support and a space to show up as your true self. Idea: Seek out colleagues or mentors who value authenticity and who could help you reach your personal goals. Who could you surround yourself with that respect the real you and that empower you to excel?
This time around, how about taking a moment to consider the various masks you wear in your life these days. Reflect on who you are underneath them and what steps would it take for you to be able to show up as your true self.
This Halloween, embrace the spirit of All Hallows’ Eve instead of as a ghost or ghoul! See it as a time to go all with for courage and authenticity! Imagine the impact of bringing your real self to your professional world—how might things change?
