✨ Decluttering Isn’t About Things. It’s About Direction

There was a moment in one of our Mastermind sessions where the topic of “decluttering” came up. Not in the neat, tidy, Marie Kondo sense. But in the way many of us experience it in real life. Too much to do. Too many ideas. Too many things pulling at our attention. And underneath it all, a quiet sense of “I can’t keep up with all of this.”

When Everything Feels Like Too Much

What struck me in that conversation was this: everyone knew they needed to declutter. They were already thinking about it. Talking about it. Some were even in the process of doing it. And yet… I wasn’t sure if anything had truly changed. Because the real issue wasn’t the clutter itself. It was the lack of clarity about what should stay. When everything feels important, nothing really is.

The Kind of Clutter We Don’t Talk About

Clutter isn’t just physical. It shows up as:

  • too many ideas you want to pursue
  • too many projects started and not finished
  • too many voices telling you what you should be doing
  • too many directions, none fully chosen

I know this space well. I can be full of ideas. I can get excited about something new and follow the next “shiny thing.” And then, before something is fully complete, the next idea is already waiting. It can feel productive. But it can also quietly dilute your focus.

What Changed for Me

What became clearer to me in that Mastermind conversation was this:

Decluttering isn’t about removing what you don’t want.
It’s about deciding what you do want to keep.

That’s a very different starting point. Because once you’re clear on what matters, everything else begins to fall away more naturally. Not through force. But through choice. And with that comes something many people are actually looking for: peace of mind.

Clarity Creates Calm

I’ve noticed this in my own work. When I sit down and truly focus, the clutter disappears. Not because it’s gone. But because I’m clear, in that moment, about what matters most. Clarity has a way of quieting the noise. Without it, everything competes. With it, things fall into place.

A Different Way to Declutter

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by “too much,” here’s a different place to start:

Instead of asking,
👉 What should I get rid of?

Ask yourself:

  • Who do I want to be right now?
  • What am I genuinely working toward?
  • What do I no longer want to give my time and energy to?

These are not productivity questions. They are direction questions. And direction is what makes action meaningful.

A Small Shift That Changes Everything

Decluttering, in its simplest form, is this: Choosing, consciously, what deserves your attention.

Not everything will. And that’s the point. Because once you choose, you can begin to act with intention instead of reaction. And that’s where things start to move again.

Final Thought

If things feel like “too much” right now, it may not be because you have too much. It may be because too many things are still undecided. And sometimes, the most powerful step forward…  is deciding what stays.
